Christmas

As the holidays near I notice more and more commercials on tv about toys and other gifts. The ad agencies are funneling more and more money into advertising their holiday products for Christmas. I cant help but wonder if Christmas is becoming more and more materialized. It is all about the things people want and not about the actual holdiay. The commericials are getting fancier and fancier along with the sophisticated products coming out near Christmas. I admit that I see myself as becoming a part of this crowd because I tend to follow the trends, but this year I am going to step away from the crowd and think about something other than things this Christmas. As you read this, just remember what the holidays are about and think about your family and friends which is one of the most important aspects of everyday life.

Deadlines!

As the year comes to an end deadlines seem to approach faster and faster. We as students have known about these deadlines since August, but I personally realized that I was not prepared at all. At the end of the semester I always tend to freak out about grades and things slipping through my fingers. The same thing happened to me in years past, and I thought I would be prepared this year. I was slightly more prepared, but as a warning to others deadlines come fast! I did not realize what college life would be like and the one point of advice I would give to entering freshman would be to watch deadlines carefully. They all come at once when you least expect it.
I was expecting this week to be relatively easy, but I had a rude awakening when I had to read a 400 page book in one day this week. I was ill-prepared for this and I had a wake up call. Never will I procrastinate that much again! This is just a post to warn others so they do not have to go throuhg the rough day I did. Everyone preaches in college about keeping up with work and I did so fairly well, but the last few assignments always get me caught up. I just wanted to get this out there from a students perspective for new incoming freshman about to start college in the fall.

Young Voters

There are so many ads and commercials about young voters. I am registered to vote, but I found it was difficult to register for college students. If they do not live in the state where they go to college, a student must register as an absentee voter. My parents are great and I admit I am not very independent. Because of this my mom assisted me with registering. If she had not been so helpful I do not think I would have made the dead line. I understand how important voting is but is there any way to make it easier to register for college students? These are the voters that the country needs most. Did anyone else find it hard to register if they didnt live in the state of their college?

Juicy Campus

I just recently found out about a website called Juicy campus. It is a gossip website for your university. I found this website to be extremely disturbing because not only are the posts anonymous, they can be very hurtful. I know many nice people who have had things written about them on this website.
This website has an immense number of followers and people go onto the website daily. The sad thing is that they actually believe the stuff they read. Many of these posts are written by people who dont even know the people they are writing about.
I think this website at the least should not be anonymous. If someone is too scared to write something about someone with their name attached to it, then they shouldnt be writing the comment at all.
The things said about people on this website can be very hurtful. Please try to ignore the comments on this website and even though it can be enticing, please try to stay away from this website because the more viewers the longer the website will function.

Cheerleader banned from moving

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/health/2008/09/10/denmon.cheerleader.pacemaker.wfaa?iref=videosearch

I found this story about a cheerleader from SMU. I feel this is a story that students need to follow because it is very relavent to their lives at SMU. Jamie Burns was told that she could not cheer because of a heart problem. I am writing this not because of the universities decision, but because everyone should know what kind of person Jamie Burns is. I know her personally and she is the bright and devoted individual. Cheering is something that Jamie loves to do. She lives for the sport and the challenges it brings. Jamie is dedicated to the cheerleading team and continues to support them, even though she was told she could not do what she loves. She is a person that does not let anything hold her back. This is very frustrating to me and others because she is a great person that loves to cheer. I understand the concerns that the university has about her health, but I know Jamie is determined and she will not let the this challenge dampen her spirits. She will not let this ger her down, and I know she will push through this adversity with flying colors.

Work vs. Play

As I went through my day yesterday I found myself with too much to do and very little time. Around 9 o'clock I realized that I still had homework to do. This work was not necessary, and I would usually just go to sleep. This time I decided to stay up and get most of the work done.

In this time from 9pm-1 am I learned just how everyone else at college feels, exhausted. I am used to going to bed at 10:30 or eleven and I never knew how exhausting it was to stay up doing homework. Now you are probably thinking, does she not do her homework? The answer is I always get the necessary assignments out of the way first, and I believe sleep is very important.

Sleep is crucial to a normal functioning life. But the real question is, why do college students stay up till insane hours of the night and insist on exhausting themselves day after day? My answer to this question is there is not enough time in a day to complete every task given to college students. We are supposed to be extremely social and get all our work done at the same time. This just is not possible. Being social is a huge part of life, but i feel that everyone expects you to spend a huge amount of time devoted to this one subject. There just is not enough time in a day for work and play. I am not saying in any way that if you are social then you are a bad student. I am saying that to balance precious time is difficult and sometimes the ball gets dropped.
